Being Isan's second largest province, Ibon Ratchathani lies in the border of southern Cambodia and the eastern Laos, which make it the well-mined and forested meeting point of Thailand, Cambodia and Laos, so-called Emerald Triangle. It covers an area of 16,112 square kilometers and is divided into 33 districts. Having been a well-founded community for hundreds of years, Ubon has a mix of ethnicities which make it have the diversity of culture with special characteristics and excellent food scene.

The capital, Ubon Ratchathani, also known as “Big 4 of Isan”, is one of the four main cities of Isan. Its name means “Royal Lotus City” for its hosting a pond with a lotus flower and a round frame. The city was established by descendant of Phra Wo and Phra Ta, Thao Kham Phong in the late 18th century. He was the first ruler dominating Ubon Ratchathani. In 1792 Ubon became a province as well as the centre of administration of Isan.

Ubon Ratchathani is a gateway to Laos and known for forested monasteries. It has been blessed with numerous natural wonders as well as beautiful cutural and historical sites. It doesn’t own the pristine sandy beaches or high forested mountains but it has its own geographical identity. The selection of natural attractions consists of caves, rivers, natural rock formations, cliffs and waterfalls, which all are the perfect places for those who love adventure. Tourists can find these destinations in Phu Chong-Na Yoi National Park, Kaeng Tana National Park and Pha Taem National Park, etc. In addition, Ubon is home to a large number of cultural and historical sites, including City Pillar Shrine, Monument of Goodness, Wat Thung Si Mueng, Wat Si Thong, etc. the province is also home to the Candle Festival, one of the world’s oldest agricultural communities, which is held annually in July or August and other festivals as Flower Festival, Kaeng Saphue Songkran Festival, etc.
