Lying on the Mun River Basin, a tributary of the Mekong, Surin is a big province of the lower northeastern region of Thailand. It is about 457km from Bangkok, covers an area of 8,124 square kilometers and consists of 17 districts. It is world-famous for the Elephant Roundup, big elephants which will make good impression with loveliness, warmth and cleverness. Local people here have had close relationship with elephant for a long time and that kind of animal becomes the special icons of the province.

The province has its original name “Khu Prathai Village” by the city’s governor and it used to be the old city of the ancient Cambodian about 200 years ago. Beside the famous icon as elephant animal, Surin is well-known as the land of beautiful scenario for travelling and souvenir shopping, various Khmer ruins, prestigious silk, picturesque rosary, fragrant jasmine rice, rich culture and a wide variety of handicrafts. Tourists can come to visit Khwao Sinaring Handicraft Village which is notable for fine silk, silver beads and ornaments as belts, necklaces, watches, rings, etc. You also have chance to enjoy many home-made food in Mueang district with typical kinds of food as shredded pork, sweet radish in honey and Chinese sausage, etc. In addition, you can explore the culture of Cambodia with numerous cultural and historical sites as City Pillar Shrine, The Monument of Phaya Surin Phakdi Si Narong Changwang, Wat Burapharam, Surin National Museum, Lower Isan Art and Crafts Centre, etc.

Internationally, Surin hosts a number of well-known festivals, for instance, Surin Jasmine Rice and Silk Cloth Fair, the Annual Grand Elephant Round Up, Ascending Phanom Sawai Mountain Festival, Eel Festival, the Elephant Day and Buffalo Blessing Festival etc, each of them has its own special characteristics which make it interesting and impressing.
